Serve with Baked Beans
Combine flours and salt in mixing bowl.
In separate bowl mix soda in water, and then add molasses.
Add buttermilk to molasses mixture. Add liquid to flour gradually, beating until just combined. Dust raisins with flour, then stir them into batter.
Spoon into 2 well-greased coffee cans or 1 qt. molds, filling them 2/3 full. Cover tightly with a double layer of foil. Steam in covered kettle with water half way up cans for 2½ to 3 hours. Add more water as needed to keep water near same level. Unmold loaves. Bake in a moderate (325°) oven for 10 minutes to dry loaves. Cool.
Slice with a string, never a knife (if you are a purist).
