About 24 doughnuts
Beat egg, adding sugar until smooth. Stir in butter, them milk with soda in it. Season with spices and salt. Stir in enough of the flour to make dough stiff enough to roll out. Be careful - don't use any more flour than necessary.
Roll and cut out doughnuts. Fry in lard heated over high heat to 370° F.
Note: I usually double this recipe and use 4 lbs. fat to fry all of them. Fat may be saved and reused a couple of times.
