How do you spell it - Durrum or Durham?
John Durrum's name is spelled "Durham" in some Civil War records. What was the "real" spelling?
John Durrum clearly and consistently used "Durrum." Only in some military records and the 1850 census, when he is listed in his step-father's household, do you find "Durham." In the 1880 census the enumerator actually lists his name as 'Jno. J. "Durrum"(sic)' There is a citizen's record for the Confederate States that is a receipt for payment to him for 3 days service as a carpenter in Oct 1861 at $1.50 a day. His signature at the bottom is "John Durrum"
Records for his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather also fairly consistently show "Durrum." Here are signatures taken from a religious petition of 1787. His great-grandfather, James Durrum (1736-1792) clearly signed his own name, and spelled it Durrum. His grandfather James Durrum, jr. (1765-aft 1840) has a signature immediately following, as "Durham." It is much more fluent, so he either was better educated, or perhaps less educated, since is appears someone else would sign for those who couldn't sign their own name (though I think they would have copied his father's spelling in that case). Anyway, the spelling Durrum, despite its peculiarity, was used predominantly. If James jr. intentially used the more common/refined spelling in his youth, he later reverted since later records refer to him as "Durrum."
